WICHITA CHURCHES HAVE FLOATS IN GAY PRIDE PARADE
Posted on Fri, Jun. 22, 2007
Parade and festival part of gay pride event
"Out & About" is the theme for this year's Pride Parade and Festival, an event sponsored by the Wichita Gay Pride Committee.
"We decided that since we continue to grow, 'Out & About' would be the perfect theme," said Donna Ayers, one of the event organizers.
The annual parade kicks off the event, and begins at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elm and Main, just north of the Old Sedgwick County Courthouse. Floats from businesses, local churches and a color guard will travel down Main Street and end at the festival at Heritage Square Park, Main and William.
All eight chapters of the Kansas Equality Coalition will be represented in this year's parade.
"We have a much wider base than last year," said Bruce McKinney, another event organizer.
The festival will feature vendors with food and drinks, speakers, and a children's area, in addition to local entertainment.
Steff Mahan, an alternative-country singer/songwriter from Nashville, will perform at the festival.
More than 1,000 people attended last year's event. This year, organizers are hoping to attract 12,000 to 13,000 people, McKinney said.
"It's important that we are out in the open and that we do public events like this so we can dispel a lot of myths," McKinney said.
Admission is a $5 button available at the gate. For more information, visit www.wichitapride.org, or call 316-992-6115.
